Each year, thousands of lost pets enter shelters across the country. While collars and ID tags are helpful, they can fall off or become unreadable. That’s where microchips come in — they’re your pet’s permanent ticket home.

Microchips save lives.

A recent study found that microchipped dogs were over 2.5 times more likely to be reunited with their owners. For cats, the odds were even better — over 20 times more likely to make it back home! Your pet’s safety matters to us. Microchipping is a small step that can make a life-changing difference.

August 15th is National Check the Chip Day, a reminder of the importance of microchipping and keeping your pet’s microchip information up-to-date.

At SARL, every pet adopted goes home microchipped — it’s one of the most powerful tools we have to reunite lost animals with their families. But the microchip is only effective if the contact information registered to it is correct. If you’ve moved, changed phone numbers, or aren’t sure which database your pet is registered with, today is the perfect day to check.

What is a microchip?

A microchip is a tiny device (about the size of a grain of rice) that’s placed under your pet’s skin — usually between the shoulder blades. Each chip has a unique ID number that links to your contact information in a national database. If your pet is found and scanned at a shelter or veterinary clinic, the chip can lead to a quick and safe reunion — but only if your info is accurate.

Why “Check the Chip”?

Even if your pet is already microchipped, checking the chip means:

  • Verifying that the chip is still working and readable.

  • Confirming your pet’s chip is registered with your current contact info.

  • Updating your phone number, address, or email if it’s changed.

What You Can Do Today:

  • Call your vet or our shelter to check your pet’s microchip number.

  • Visit www.petmicrochiplookup.org to find the registry connected to your chip.

  • Log in to the registry and make sure your contact info is current.

So this August 15, take five minutes to “Check the Chip.” And if you adopted from us, know your pet already has this head start — just make sure your info is still correct!

Thank you for being a responsible, loving pet parent.

With care,

Your SARL Veterinary Team
